FAQ

Common questions on income tax and tds

What are the ITR due dates for AY 2026-27?

For income of FY 2025-26: ITR-1 and ITR-2 were due on 31 July 2026. Business and profession cases without an audit were due on 31 August 2026. Audit cases were due on 31 October 2026; the CBDT has extended this to 21 November 2026 (press release of 28 September 2026). Transfer pricing cases under section 92E are due on 30 November 2026. A belated return can be filed until 31 December 2026, with late fee and interest.

What changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025?

The new Act replaced the Income-tax Act, 1961 from 1 April 2026. It uses one 'tax year' instead of the previous year and assessment year. TDS rules now sit in sections 392 and 393. Forms have new numbers: Form 138 replaces Form 24Q, Form 140 replaces Form 26Q, and Forms 130 and 131 replace Forms 16 and 16A. Income and transactions up to 31 March 2026 stay under the 1961 Act.

When must TDS be deposited and TDS returns filed?

TDS deducted in a month is generally deposited by the 7th of the next month. For March, non-government deductors have until 30 April. Quarterly TDS returns are due by 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May, for the quarters ending June, September, December and March.

Who has to pay advance tax?

Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS, is Rs. 10,000 or more. It is paid in four parts: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March (cumulative). Resident senior citizens with no business or professional income do not have to pay it. A shortfall attracts interest.
